Barb Forrister

Barb Forrister

Barb Forrister is an international award-winning quilt and fiber artist whose work focuses on surface design and 3 dimensional soft sculpting. She is a member of Texas Federation of Fiber Artists, Studio Art Quilts Association and the International Quilt Association.

Currently residing in Austin, her true love is creating nature and pictorial scenes in a 3 dimensional manner. As an avid environmentalist and recycler, Barb gets her inspiration from observing nature and employing unusual and “upcycled” materials to convey textural surfaces. Many of these materials include heat distressed plastics, hand dyed, inked or painted textiles, fibers, beads and trinkets.

Barb also supports and contributes to many causes by donating her time and work to organizations such as The Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative, American Cancer Society and the National Wildlife Federation.

Her work has also been published in SAQA Portfolios 16-22, Dinner at Eight Artists Presents Beneath The Surface, The Space Between Rituals and Affinity book editions, Texas Artist Portrait Projects, In Stitches Emag (VolumeV),  Lone Stars III: A Legacy of Texas Quilts 1986-2011 and Colorful Fabric Collage: Sketch Fuse Quilt.

Artist Statement:
As a fiber artist, I make my own original designs working in a variety of medias and techniques. I hand dye and or paint many of my fabrics with procion fiber reactive dyes, acrylics, oil paint sticks, inks and wax pastels. The fabrics are then texturized by adding tulle, sheers, cheesecloth, fibers and heat distressed plastics. My goal is to capture the viewer’s attention through both visual and tactile means with a 3 dimensional flare.
